sinbad người đi biển

a friend recently gave me a nice tour to see this nice sail boat (might have been a similar one…, pix also not mine).

it totally reminded me of Sinbad and his 7 adventures in the sea in 1001 Arabian nights. Back when i was around 8 or 9, a friend loaned me this book and i was so in love with it i hand-copied the whole 7 adventures for keep (took me more than a month of doing nothing but copy-writing days and nights after school hours.)

Even now after many many years i still have these adventures memorized, particularly the ones where he, instead of marrying a princess, got condemned to death-by-alive-burial after failing to wash hands after eating garlic, or where he got a parasite-old-man living on his neck, or where he was almost eaten alive by a giant…  the cool thing which sticks with me is that after each trip, he declared to never venture into the sea again, only to give in to the urge and sail off some time later.  in a way, he had been a role model of curiosity for me.  after each escape, somehow the mind forgets about it and you’re set to go at it again, all to keep life as rich and lively (or as stupid) as possible.

so i did dream of becoming a sailor thanks to Sinbad. i mean, the earth is covered with 70% water, there’s got to be plenty of space worth exploring.  after my first trip on a tiny boat back in 1988 though, now the first image entering my mind when i see these boats (besides Sinbad) is actually this 😀

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

anyhow, i’ll be downloading all 7 adventures for keep and passing on to nieces and nephews. here they are:
