fifa women world cup 2011 is here

thanks to free satellite tv on jetblue, i just realized the women world cup is here! and my favorite player scored the open goal of the tournament for Germany, wiht a similar header from the far side as the first goal i saw her scored way back in 2003 which knocked the US out of the semifinal. Anyhow, these fotos are “borrowed” from the official fifa website, where you can also find complete schedule. If you live in the US, the matches are available “for free” on espn3.com (for free means you need internet from some big name companies i believe, you can always go there and try out, for example here’s the replay of the tournament opening Germany vs Canada yesterday or Japan vs New Zealand today).
Edit: so, i’ve just done watching the complete replay of the opening match, amazing! here’s the highlight via youtube:

some comments:
the passing skill of Garefrekes is amazing, she passes very quickly as well before the defense can get set. Celia Okoyino Da Mbabi is also very good with her passing and finishing. On the Canadian side, Christine Sinclair is a specimen, it’s too bad I only get to see her brilliance on display now. I used to dislike the Canadian approach of bulldozing over all other teams, but now with the new Italian coach, they’re such a fun group of players to watch with the nice passing game. Don’t miss the very nice wind-kiss Sinclair gave to her coach after she scored that magnificent free-kick in the highlight video above.
Tomorrow, USA is playing North Korea, and i heard there’re some 9 teenagers on the Korean side! let’s see about waking up at 9AM EST!!

great to know there’s someone else out there cheering on the FIFA Women’s World Cup!

I’m reduced to illegal online livestreams since Spain doesn’t broadcast a thing (men’s soccer, all the time, women’s soccer, what’s that?), but I manage to keep up. I really enjoyed the opening game, too. – And her Mexican goalkeeper yesterday was very impressive!

Some of the ladies can certainly be eye-catching but their grunts and wails can be most disconcerting and can ( almost) put one off.
Surely, DtO, you are diverted already by the coverage of William and Kate!!!

    • Aye. I’ve started avoiding my Yahoo email because the top news on every page is W&K.

Why is grunting getting worse over the years, I wonder? Last time I followed these things, Monica Seles was the only one who grunted. It was an eccentricity. I wish we weren’t such cry-babies, women in tennis. Navratilova and Graff never grunted. Don’t tell me Serena Williams grunts? What is the world coming to.

Both the Williamses are out but the Grunter/Screamer-in-Chief, Sharapova, is still there. I couldn’t forgive her for using her cell phone on court immediately after she won last time. She wanted to phone home but there was no signal! Manners? Young people? What is the world coming to.

      • Wait a minute! Sharapova actually *won* something? I thought she only had a career because the media (read: men) liked her. Who knows, she may be grunting strategically, to feed male fantasies. Yes, I’m cynical a wee bit.

she did, a couple of wimbledon i think, might have been a US open or Australian open as well. she has tremendous power but it can get quite erratic at times… ah, poor Sinclair, she just got a ball full speed into her broken nose. morphine is not allowed during the world cup… wow, france has just vaulted to top of the group…

ah, wimbledon pix… i confess i’ve put even frau K and Harteros on hold while cheering for Kerstin Garefrekes and Co. uh oh, as i type, team canada is falling quite behind… Sinclair is controlling the ball so well but canada passing skill is nowhere near les bleus’ .

    Quote from Wimbledon web site:

Sharapova has still not dropped a set this fortnight, and will be the hot favourite against the inexperienced Petra Kvitova in Saturday’s final.

  6. “Hot favourite”, eh? Well, all right, Mr Commentator.
