vietnamese watercress salad

zoom in of watercress salad with
beef

Another of my favorite vietnamese dishes. Instruction below courtesy of my sister-in-law, with a slight modification. I had to go shopping for olive oil, vinegar, and filet mignon for the first time in life too.. only because previously they have always been handled by little sister who either had the ingredients or used the former hausmate’s.

Ingredient:
1 bunch of watercress
1/5 to 1/4 kg of filet mignon
20 grape tomatoes
1 small white onion
3-4 garlic cloves
fish sauce 🙂
sugar
salt
extra virgin olive oil
vinegar
black pepper

Instruction:
1. Thinly slice the beef
2. marinate with some sugar (1 tsp), fish sauce (1 tbsp), black pepper, minced garlic for 1 hour
3. At high heat, stir fried the beef for about 1 minute, add white onion, turn off heat
4. remove meat from pan to prevent over cooking the beef.

Dressing: (this one I follow strictly her measurements… had to sort out those tsb and tbsp…
In a container: add
– 2 tsp sugar
– a tiny bit of salt
– 2 tbsp of vinegar
– 1 tbsp of extra virgin olive oil
stir until all is well mixed.

Plate:
Put in the watercress, cut approximately 1/2 length of finger in length (we measure things with finger length in Vietnam), cut grape tomatoes in 1/2, put meat + white onion on top, then add dressing to taste.

First picture was from my sister 6 years ago. BElow is mine. super tasty!

  1. watercress, she says.
And then it has FILET MIGNON? Sign me up!

    1. i need to stay at your place longer, while *not* writing proposal 😉 .

      1. delicious idea!

  2. this picture size will not do. I need a way bigger one 😉

    1. btw, vinegar is something every household needs. It’s awesome for so many things and not just in food.

      1. oh, i’ll have to learn what i’ve missed since this is only the 2nd time in life i used vinegar 😉

        1. among other things it’s a wonderful, natural cleaner.

          1. oh, i always took baking soda for that task

          2. you can even combine them!

    2. believe it or not, i have bigger pix ;-), resolution 4000 or something!

        1. i was googling watercress and read it was the main staple in England for the longest time! are you guys still eating it?

          1. all I can tell you is it’s readily available in any supermarket.

          2. 😮 , i didn’t pay attention!! ok, we might have salad (though i’m staying extremely short this time… and might need all of it to sleep 😀 )

          3. let me know if you want me to pick up some ingredients.

          4. we can settle for something a bit less serious than filet mignon if you see it on sale? i nearly broke my bank last night for a chunk of meat 😀 . though i can ask what can be used.. coz i’m totally clueless when it comes to beef.. then just beef (400gr?) , small tomatoes, 1 white onion, and watercress. you have all other things at home? (fishsauce, salt, pepper, vinegar, olive oil?)

          5. no fishsauce as the old one expired, but I can pick it up.

          6. expired! there’s no such thing! 🙂 , but ja, next time put it in fridge, they last longer that way. if you have soy sauce, that should do too, according to my sister-in-law (though i’m more fluent with fishsauce)

          7. there is soy sauce. Do you have any idea what kind of beef? This is the land of beef, so it shouldn’t be a problem finding it.

          8. i don’t know, do you know anything resembling filet mignon but 1 step down? there’s a whole cow with cuts and i have no clue.. so i can only follow exact instruction… but i can ask my sister now..

          9. very cool, thanks! so 2, 6 and 10?

          10. no no, wait please, apparently there’s a difference between my left and sister-in-law’s left, wait

          11. hahahaha, yes, she called me ;-), coz clearly… anyhow, she meant “middle” = “middle number”, not middle of the cow :D, so you want 1–5 😉

          12. but that is the middle of the cow in that picture. Also the shoulder (2).

          13. ja, but 1–5 = middle and to the right; middle and to the left = 2,6,10 according to my eyes.. so i just asked her for numbers.. did you know i once bought pork and thought it was beef?

          14. it’s not easy to tell them apart unless you hear the animal moo or snort 😉 Ok, I’ll look up the ingredients. We also should make sure we stock up on things to eat there as at the weekend they tend to close down.

          15. oh, true! can i leave you to the task? if i’m correct i’m not allowed to carry anything into the UK. also, aren’t we arriving on friday? or sat ?

          16. yes, we are arriving on friday, just saying that we might either bring something (I am) or stock up on food that day, to be on the safe side 😉

          17. hayyyy, you’re right, SKIP 2 please! just stay somewhere on the “TENDER” side.

          18. 1, 3, 4, 5 then. Whatever’s cheaper 😉

          19. “2” also included now. 1–5.
man, people and their instructions.. and people like me who get totally confused… and significantly much worse at “cheese”.

          20. well, then left is left 😉 like I said, whatever’s cheaper 😉 it looks like the tender meat, which is why I suppose it gets done so quickly.

            I’d say cheese is easier.

          21. i once bought mozzarella thinking it was Parmesan..
(also once accidentally discovered pesto = not tomato)

          22. (ps- don’t forget garlic 🙂 , and 2 onions, 2 bunches of watercress, essentially for 2 people)

          23. I’ll take the list of ingredients with me when I go shopping on Wednesday.

          24. gosh, sorry, i’m now tooootally confused… i have no idea. let me check again.. ok, here’s her wordings:
“Left = 5,4,3,2,1” . There. now i get it, she said left = left in the arrow direction.. whereas i was looking at the cow itself..

          25. I was looking at the cow too 😉

          26. (in the call, she also updated me that she checked my blogpost (this one) and found a mistake in 2tsp vs 1tsp, so that’s now also fixed 😉 )

          27. don’t forget the pix of the cow 😉 , and know your left.

          28. 😉 I’ll print the cow out at work.

          29. (i read it as “i’ll print the cow to work out” 😉 )

          30. working out with the cows is woodsy contralto job 😉
