cast:
Berliner Philharmoniker. Conductor: Sir Simon Rattle.
Pavol Breslik: Tamino. Ana Durlovski: Queen of the Night. Dimitry Ivashchenko: Sarastro. Kate Royal: Pamina. Michael Nagy: Papageno. Chen Reiss: Papagena. Annick Massis: First Maid. Magdalena Kozená: Second Maid. Nathalie Stutzmann: Third Maid. José van Dam: narrator. James Elliott: Monostatos. Aurelius Sängerknaben Calw: Three boys.

That’s quite a line up of the maids! Fingers crossed there’s no geo-blocking. After some flipping, i back on an euro-centric schedule which i really enjoy coz one can just open up that worldconcerthall schedule and listen to live music all day while working. Over the weekend though, in mid-flipping process, i went through 1.5 of Handel’s Giulio Cesare and arrived a a conclusion: Sarah Connolly is absolutely fantastic to listen to and look at! So here’s music to greeting an early start to april and getting into working/listening mood (she’s accompanied by a fantastic horn, and the orchestra/conductor is also veeeeery nice, i really like conductor’s take on what I’d call my intro into Giulio Cesare)

  1. Do you know if they archive to watch later? – can’t do this today 😦

    1. good morning Eyes, according to the site, “En ligne encore pendant 90 jours et 8 heures” , which i could attempt to translate as avail for 90days afterward? my guess-translation could be quite off…

      1. Good MORNING Dr T !!!! ( you *are* doing well)
I missed that bit when I looked – the translation is correct and I am an idiot! Sorry.

      2. well, whether one can connect to the site is another matter entirely… i’ve been trying w/o success to listen to this, kept getting this circle turning thing…

scratch that, hooray, got it, fingers crossed for later then… now to Bach. (i did try the Bach marathon over at bbc3, but one can only have so much of unfamiliar Bach 🙂 )

  2. Thank you so much – now settled down with a mug of tea, Cadburys creme egg and this on the telly !😊

    1. you’re welcome! am enjoying it too, loooovely orchestra and scenery. had to put on my headset though coz it’s middle of working day here 🙂 Those 3 “maids” are delicious i must admit, think i should read up synopsis and all given my german-guessing skill is…
(ps- i somehow always thought Natalie Stutzmann is very tall)

      1. He-he you’re supposed to be working you must have great powers of concentration! I can’t say that I’ve really noticed the “maids” until now ..
As for the tallness issue must be the heels ( first act) ! 👠

        1. hehe, i wasn’t exactly “working” during that first part… but now people are all in at work and i can’t settle too much… but turns out colleague is very interested, even joining watching a bit

        2. oh, i didn’t get the heels point until now, just saw, she’s the only one not wearing heels :-). back for 2nd round…
ps- wow her voice so dark, when she was speaking (in opera) i thought it was the baritone!

  3. I have tuned in now – is it the interval or is it over already?

    1. hi Eyes, i think it’s the first break. not sure why i can’t get in anymore. first pause was already 40min ago… i left for milk tea, came back, now get this “pause entracte” on screen…

  4. Aha. Here we go!

    1. back! great! colleague just put head in “shocked” to see i around 😀

    2. aaaaaaack, just, JUST, missed the aria!!!! but needed a conversation w/ colleague, well, i’ll sort out in replay later :-). how was it?

      1. Just magic!

        1. just made it here, indeed, magic! really like her characterization too, making the queen quite vulnerable. the voice, quite amazing. i’d kill for her, whoever sarastro is :-D.

        2. oooh, i get it, just done re-watching this, the queen of the night is teaming up with Sarastro to test her daughter (??), that’s why first she had a kiss with Sarastro at end of act 1, then a short discussion with him again during her 2nd killer aria… on unrelated note, i came across this photo, quite charming. and Pavol Breslik, i missed hearing him 2 years ago in munich in lucrezia borgia, no wonder the name and face look familiar…
(ps- thought i done hibernating… but it was premature, had been sleeping off through May… think i need to scheme to fly to germany each year for 1/2 of may for health sake… why can’t we have romeo each year, oh whyyyyy)

      2. Missed some of it due to IT probs -a bit Fatal Attraction ?

  5. Gorgeous!

    1. which part? he was just done eating when your comment arrived. takes me a bit to settle in again… and already lost track of the whole thing.. but did i say i love the orchestra? and all the singing in fact…

“Wo ist Tamino”, my german is improving…

  6. “Ach, ich fühl’s, es ist verschwunden” soprano aria. (I have Wiki open for reference!)

  7. many many applause, wonderful singing & orchestra (and conductor of course)! thank you both for swinging by too. wonderful performance! (aaand, looovely staging, like!)

  8. It was wonderful thank you – I’m glad they all had flowers – even the cherubs!
